West Ham United Football Club is an English football club based in the East End of London.
West Ham are one of the most traditional clubs in England and the whole of the UK, one of 20 that have played for at least 60 seasons in the English Premier League, and the 2019-20 Season registering their 62nd Premier League presence, the 18th club that has scored most in all editions, the 10th most in the Premier League, and one of 17 with at least 3 FA Cup titles. In 2015 the British newspaper Daily Mail published a study of the 50 biggest clubs in England, using the criteria of titles, average positions in the English Championship since its first season, average attendance, stars (selectable and players in World Cups), international popularity and financial resources, with West Ham occupying twelfth place on that occasion. Their new home is the London Olympic Stadium, which was built for the 2012 Olympics. After a refurbishment of the stadium, the capacity was 80,000 to 57,000 seats, and in December 2018 to 60,000.
Another remarkable fact is that, even though it had a modest number of titles compared to the biggest English clubs, when it went through what was perhaps the best phase in its history, it was one of the two clubs that provided the most players for the squad that won the only English national team title in World Cups in 1966: three, as well as Manchester United. In addition, the three hammers called up for that World Cup were among the starting eleven in the decider (Manchester had two, Sir Bobby Charlton and Nobby Stiles): the legendary defender Bobby Moore, captain of the English Team and therefore who lifted the trophy; and the attacking duo Sir Geoff Hurst and Martin Peters, authors of the four goals that gave the title to the English. Hurst still holds the record for top scorer in a Cup Final, having scored three times. His greatest achievement was the 1964-65 European Cup.
The club also boasts several talented players such as Anton Ferdinand, Bobby Zamora, Frank Lampard, Paul Ince, Glen Johnson, Jermain Defoe, Joe Cole, Mark Noble, Michael Carrick, Rio Ferdinand, Trevor Brooking, Yossi Benayoun, among many others. West Ham became even more popular in Brazil when, in August 2006, they hired Argentinian players Carlos Tévez and Javier Mascherano, who then played for Corinthians.

The London club has illustrious fans such as Steve Harris, bassist, leader and main composer of Iron Maiden, who from the stick of the team “Up the Hammers” created a stick for his band; “Up the Irons”. Harris in the 70’s, even performed in his basic categories, before following the path of music. Other fans are the political leaders, Barack Obama, who came to admire West Ham when he was in London, Queen Elizabeth II, who when one of her employees commented on a game of rival Millwall, she expressed her passion for “Hammers”, and also Dino Thomas, Harry Potter’s character, who has a poster of the team on his bedside in the dormitory of Grifinória. The region where the West Ham is located, East End, is a stronghold of the proletariat and immigrants.
West Ham was founded in 1895 by workers from Thames Ironworks and Shipbuilding Co. Ltd, a shipyard located on the River Thames nine years before the construction of its stadium, the Boleyn Ground, which is better known as Upton Park because it is located in the London district of the same name.
A philosophical feature of West Ham is to value the work of its coaches, because until 1989, the club had only had five coaches in its history. Their uniform, like those of Burnley and Scunthorpe United, is inspired by that of Aston Villa, which is characterised by white shorts and socks and blue-sleeved gray shirts.
This club became even more mediatic after the film “Green Street Hooligans” put it at the centre of the film script, which also demonstrates the derby against Millwall as its most rival classic. There is also the 2008 film Cass, which illustrates this rivalry. As clashes with Millwall have been rare with their frequent stay in the second or third division of the English league for some time now, West Ham classics have been mainly against the big London teams in the elite: Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea.
